Australia’s aged care sector continues to ask where the future workforce will come from, with many pointing to migration as the answer. But current data shows most aged care workers are already permanent residents or citizens, and many simply want more hours.

Around one-third of the workforce is overseas-born, a rate similar to that of the broader population, and only a small minority holds temporary visas. Despite this, new visa pathways remain a common policy focus, even though past migration programs have delivered limited results.

The real opportunity is in the existing workforce. Nearly 30% of Personal Care Workers want additional shifts, signalling a significant underused pool of trained staff. With 95% of workers holding formal qualifications, better job security, recognition of skills, and predictable hours could make an immediate impact.

Strengthening and supporting the people already in the sector will build stability, reduce turnover, and improve continuity of care—key foundations for a sustainable aged care system.
