Australia’s aged care system is under increasing pressure as demand for home support and residential care grows faster than supply. Peak body Ageing Australia warns that without urgent investment, long wait times and workforce shortages could compromise the ability of older Australians to remain independent at home.

More than 100,000 people are currently waiting for a Support at Home package, with another 100,000 awaiting assessment. Median wait times have doubled in recent years, meaning older Australians are often forced into hospitals or residential care prematurely. Meanwhile, residential aged care bed shortages are projected to worsen, with an estimated 10,000 new beds needed annually over the next two decades, far above current construction rates.

Workforce shortfalls add to the strain, with projections showing a need for an additional 400,000 care workers by 2050.

For care providers, these pressures highlight the importance of efficient systems to manage packages, staff, and compliance. Platforms like CareVision can help organisations coordinate care, track funding, and optimise workforce planning to meet rising demand while maintaining quality and safety.
