Following the recent announcement of proposed NDIS reforms, the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has confirmed that no immediate changes will occur for participants or providers. Existing plans, funding arrangements and operational requirements will remain unchanged until legislation is formally passed and implementation begins.
The department has outlined a staged reform process that includes expanded provider registration requirements, changes to payment and claiming systems, and a new planning framework. Mandatory registration for providers delivering higher-risk supports is expected to begin rolling out from July 2027, while provider enrolment requirements and payment reforms will also be introduced progressively. A new planning model, supported by individual needs assessments, is scheduled to commence from April 2027.
Consultation will continue throughout the year, with stakeholders invited to provide feedback on planning, eligibility assessments, pricing models and supported independent living arrangements. The government says the extended timelines reflect feedback from the disability community and are intended to allow careful implementation while maintaining continuity of support for participants.
