The Australian Government has announced plans to introduce a new escalation pathway for complex aged care assessments, allowing clinical delegates to refer cases for departmental review when an automated funding outcome does not reflect an older person’s needs. The proposal aims to strengthen oversight of the Integrated Assessment Tool (IAT), with further consultation on the process expected.
While the announcement has been welcomed as a positive step, key details—including eligibility criteria, review timeframes and how the pathway will operate—are still being developed. The Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) has called for independent advocates to be included in the process and for the new mechanism to respond effectively to changing care needs.
The proposed pathway follows several recent adjustments to the IAT, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve assessment accuracy under the Support at Home program. Broader discussions on the future of the assessment process continue as the government works with the sector on further reforms.
