Rising living costs are placing additional pressure on Australia’s aged care workforce, with new research from Randstad finding that one in three health and aged care workers has taken on—or is considering taking on—a second job. The findings highlight growing concerns about staff fatigue, burnout and workforce sustainability as the sector continues to navigate ongoing reforms.

The research also found that work-life balance is now a stronger driver of employee retention than salary. Many respondents said flexible work arrangements, supportive leadership and positive workplace culture are key factors in deciding whether to stay with an employer, while poor management and burnout remain leading reasons for leaving the profession.

As aged care providers adapt to the requirements of the new Aged Care Act, supporting workforce wellbeing is becoming increasingly important. Alongside attracting new talent, organisations are being encouraged to invest in flexible rostering, strong leadership and healthier workplace environments to improve staff retention and maintain high-quality care.
