Hospital in the Home is not getting enough support or attention, despite offering benefits to Australians in need. A position paper was released by Catholic Health Australia that urges the Commonwealth Government to extend the default benefits to this healthcare model. It should have the same benefit rates as standard hospital bed day rates.

Hospitals are already being overburdened as it is with patients. With Hospital in the Home, patients don’t have to stay long or may not even need to stay in hospital to recover or get proper care. Sadly, not all Australians are able to access this safe and effective care.

Research has shown that HITH has lower readmission rates among patients, as well as shorter stays and reduced 30-day mortality. What’s more, patient satisfaction is above 80%.
