With the prices of housing and living rising, aged care workers are struggling and find themselves needing to get another job. According to a workforce firm, 1 in 3 healthcare professionals in Australia either has a second job or is considering getting one just so they can keep up with their daily living expenses.
Healthcare professionals are forced to find cheaper housing that is further from their workplace, which results in longer travel. Others may try to make ends meet by getting extra roles or increasing their hours.
The trouble with this is that nurses who have multiple roles or work longer hours are prone to fatigue. And this can definitely affect patient care. Some workers are starting to shift to agency or contractual work from permanent positions, as this may pay more.
