It’s been over 5 years since the pandemic, but COVID-19 is still around and affecting one of the most vulnerable populations in Australia. According to reports, people over 80 years old are the most susceptible to COVID-19 deaths, and those over 75 have the highest risk of hospitalisation and severe diseases caused by COVID-19.

It remains important that ageing Australians are up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations. Studies have shown that booster shots can dramatically reduce the chances of COVID-19 death. However, according to the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, there is a low uptake of COVID-19 vaccinations among older Australians, despite being urged to get boosters.
All aged care facilities are being reminded by the Department of Health and Aged Care of their obligations to deliver COVID-19 vaccinations to their residents. People over 75 years old are recommended to get boosters every 6 months, while those who are 65 to 74 should get vaccinated at least every year.
