The NDIA has accepted the recommendations from Dr Stephen Duckett’s independent review into art and music therapy, confirming the supports will continue to be funded, but at a reduced rate.

The review followed strong community backlash after the NDIA proposed cutting the hourly rate for art and music therapy to just $67.56. Under Dr Duckett’s recommendations, the new price will instead align with counselling, at $156.16 per hour. While still lower than the current $193.99 rate, this outcome avoids the steep cuts originally planned.

Dr Duckett found that while the evidence base for art and music therapy is limited, there is growing research to show these therapies can benefit certain participant groups. He recommended clearer oversight, better qualification checks, and stronger data collection on outcomes to ensure therapies are effective and delivered only by qualified professionals.

For participants, this means art and music therapy remains recognised as a therapy within the NDIS, not just a social activity, but the funding will be set at a lower level.

The NDIA has committed to implementing the review’s recommendations in full.
