The Australian Government has announced that the Support at Home program, initially scheduled for rollout on July 1, 2025, will now launch on November 1, 2025, alongside the new Aged Care Act.
The delay, confirmed by Minister for Aged Care and Seniors Sam Rae on June 4, 2025, comes in response to feedback from aged care providers and advocacy groups. It is intended to allow a smoother rollout of both the Support at Home program and the new Aged Care Act, giving providers more time to update systems and processes to meet the new requirements.
What This Means for Home Care Services
During this four-month extension:
• Current Home Care Package recipients will continue receiving services under the existing system until October 31, 2025.
• Those on the priority waitlist, currently around 83,000 Australians, will remain under the current arrangements a little longer.
• The delay is estimated to cost the federal budget $900 million, as reported by Treasurer Jim Chalmers.
While some stakeholders have expressed concern about the extended wait, many in the sector see the extra time as a valuable opportunity to prepare for the changes.
