At the 2026 Invox CHSP National Conference, Ian Yates, former acting Inspector-General of Aged Care, called for a review of the Commonwealth Home Support Program. This is due to the decision of the government maintaining CHSP as a standalone program. The independent advisor and advocate also asked an uplift in funding.
During his talk, Yates discussed “the cumulative impact of regulatory and compliance” in the aged care sector. He also said that ministers change, as will structures of government.
Yates warns that comparison between CHSP and Support at Home will emerge, especially regarding the financial level of support. Somewhere along the way, aged care has become about the system when it should be “about the people who flow through that system”. He pointed out that there shouldn’t be a wrong door when it comes to accessing aged care but acknowledges that requirements mustn’t be forgone to remain practical.
