Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has reversed its decision to withdraw from the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP), confirming that its aged care services will continue beyond 2027.

The council had planned to stop delivering the services amid uncertainty over the program’s future and concerns about meeting new aged care requirements. However, the federal government’s decision to extend CHSP funding to mid-2029, redesign the program and keep it separate from Support at Home prompted a review.

Existing services will remain unchanged, including Meals on Wheels, community transport through Dial-a-Bus, and group social support activities such as outings and excursions.

Mayor Stephen Batty welcomed the decision, highlighting the importance of continuing services such as Meals on Wheels, which the council has delivered for 50 years. He said the funding extension gave the council reason to reconsider its position and prioritise the needs of older residents.

The future structure of CHSP is still being developed. The federal government has indicated that consultation on the program’s redesign would begin soon, while Minister for Aged Care and Seniors Sam Rae has encouraged providers considering withdrawal to speak with the government before making final decisions.
